Age: 24
Current Characters: N/A
Character: Alphys
Age: Unknown- Monster lifespans are completely unaddressed in most cases- But she's an adult?
Canon: Undertale
Canon Point: Post-Pacifist route true end
Background: Wiki on Alphys's involvement- Everything before "genocide route". Canon implies that prior to this she worked under W.D. Gaster alongside Sans, and forgot about Gaster when he erased himself from the timeline, but there is not and likely will not be any confirmation of this. For general purposes I won't be referencing it.
Personality: Alphys is a being of pure anxiety.
A reclusive, introverted person, Alphys has a great deal of social anxiety, and prefers to keep to herself. She tends not to worry much about personal hygiene, or her diet, or fashion, or really much of anything- Why bother when you're just going to sit at home watching anime alone?
Beyond this, though, she wants to be more. Alphys wants to have friends, she wants to be fashionable, she wants to go on dates. Her own anxieties stop her from doing much of this, as well as her fear.
Though she's always had anxiety and self-esteem issues and been a bit of a recluse, hanging out at the garbage dump all day, she used to be very close to two monster girls named Bratty and Catty, with the two seeing her as a "big sister". Details are never given, but it's clear that when things are going well Alphys is capable of dealing with people and even holding good relationships- Her friendship with Undyne also makes this obvious.
However, her own terror at someone discovering the dark secrets within the True Lab have driven her to recede even further inward on herself, and it's only Frisk's intervention that leads her to finally come out of her shell completely. She never completely hides away, but she does have a habit of locking herself up for long periods of time, except when things go bad when she just completely vanishes off the radar.
It is, however, important to note that she has found some kind of peace with this. She sees it as just how life is- Even if it's not optimal, it's her life, and she isn't terribly concerned with fixing it. This is just who she is, and she's perfectly fine with this anxious equilibrium continuing unabated until something jars it.
While she is too anxious to express it, Alphys desperately wants friends, and to be needed. Her creation of Mettaton likely sprung from this, and her stalking Frisk and manipulating events in Hotland and the CORE are also due to her wanting Frisk to see her as a hero- While she may not have done them in any smart manner, she really just wants Frisk to need her, and think she's cool. Her own anxiety and fear lead her to believe she has no way of doing this without setting up the cards in just the right way; If she can't manufacture a situation, she feels useless.
She also has a tremendous crush on Undyne. Once again her anxiety and insecurity get in her way here, as she refuses to confess to her even when Undyne herself feels the same way; when she goes on a date with Frisk, she panics, confessing her feelings about Undyne without being aware Undyne is there, and when Undyne overhears she goes into a full panic and starts rambling about how she'll make herself better. After this, her and Undyne are incredibly attached to each other, and Alphys is never seen without her for the remainder of the storyline, except very briefly in the denouement of the True Laboratory.
Her fear of being discovered leads her to hide a great many things from even those she trusts, and she refuses to contact the families of the Amalgamates in fear that she'll be rejected or hated. Even ASGORE, who she has a small crush on, is shunned, as she is terrified. Once Frisk witnesses the Amalgamates, Alphys resolves to stop being afraid.
However, beneath these anxieties, the seeds of bravery and determination are planted. In a genocide route- Which I will not be drawing from, except for hypotheticals that are clearly present in all routes- Alphys leads the evacuation effort of all the monsters, becoming their leader. In the end, she even thanks Frisk for drawing her to become a better person despite all the horrors, and shows her ability to be someone truly confident when the chips are down.
She is also insanely obsessed with anime, and believes it to be an accurate portrayal of human history.
Abilities: Alphys is a monster. While this means many different things based on the specifics, there are some clear scientific facts- Namely, rather than being water-based like most life, monsters are magic-based, and held together solely through the same. Due to this they have the ability to use magic without the effort humans must use.
However, similarly due to this, their forms are less physical in nature, and therefore somewhat fragile. When they die, they turn to dust; Said death can be caused by just about anyone with enough determination, as the physical bonds need not be severed- only the force that holds them together. Even a child with a plastic knife can kill the strongest monster in a single hit without effort.
Alphys herself is physically and magically unimpressive; she's got a weak constitution and she never shows any magical ability herself (with one exception), and is in fact the only important character to never be battled directly in Undertale. However, she is a genius- She's the Royal Scientist for a reason, and despite some recent missteps, she's proven herself capable. Her major achievement is having transferred the SOUL- Exactly what it says on the tin, despite being presented as an acronym- of a monster into a robot, creating Mettaton. For this achievement she was given the post of Royal Scientist.
She also has done major experiments with literal resurrection, though these started out as experiments on human SOULS that went awry. In doing this, she did in fact manage to resurrect people- Even if the experiments were ruined, the fact that she reversed death is testament to her genius.
Alphys has been proven to be a general tech whiz- She's created technology that emulates the magic of those stronger than herself (Changing Frisk's heart color is generally something reserved for only the strongest bosses, but Alphys manages to pull it off with nothing but a button on a cell phone), created a functional social network completely on her own, has nearly total control over the complex machinery of Hotland and the CORE, and as mentioned previously created Mettaton, a mechanical vessel for the SOUL of a living being. (Or, well, a ghost, but same thing.)
Despite her not showing magic, when her SOUL is battled during the true final battle, she presents her own version of Mettaton's abilities- Whether this implies she keeps weapons on hand (like Sans's Gaster Blasters) that allow her to use these, or she simply gave Mettaton the ability to use similar magic to her own latent abilities, is unknown, and for purposes here she'd only be defending herself with whatever gadgets she could find/build in the city proper.
Finally, she speaks Japanese about as well as a 14-year-old in 2003. Nya? :3
Alignment: Thras. Alphys is a terrified little lizard- She's scared people will find out what she's done, she's scared that what she did with Mettaton is a bad idea, she's scared that ASGORE will kill her new friend, she's scared of people. But she's also dedicated to certain causes and can be brave when it really counts.
Other: She is going to write Arehtei fanfiction. And I am going to post it. I will take pairing requests here.
Sample: Test drive!
